With any business, investing in the latest technology is a necessary requirement to compete effectively.

The engineering industry is constantly on the move with the latest developments making life so much easier – both for the manufacturer and of course, the client.

The introduction of 5 Axis machining within the industry has not only worked in terms of cutting down costs, but also producing greater quality in quick-fire time.

Here at PRV Engineering we have invested heavily over the past 18 months.

Part of the overall investment has been the addition to our plant list of a Vertical Travelling Column Machining Centre, with full 5 Axis Synchronous Milling ability and a Large Machining Envelope.

PRV-Engineering is constantly moving with the times and as part of the company’s recent £1.25million investment, managing director Simon Jones has added a vertical travelling column machining centre with full 5-Axis Synchronous milling ability.

Five-sided machining, also known as 3+2, is the process of setting up a part once and using a machine like the Mazak VTC800/30SR to machine five sides instead of machining the part one side at a time using a conventional 3-Axis machining centre.

Through the acquisition of and constant investment in new technology, PRV has moved forward at a significant rate of knots with one of the latest additions to the company’s plant being a state of the art, vertical travelling column machining centre with full Five Axis Synchronous milling ability – the Mazak VTC800/30SR

What is Five Axis machining?

5-axis machining is now used by many machining companies and allows machining of a part along 5 axes of motion compared to 3 axes in one setup. While this can be a cost saving factor, 5 Axis machining is used more often for complex contour work, which may need simultaneous movement of all 5 Axes.

Recent advances in software have helped make the conversion from 3-axis and 3+2 axis positioning to simultaneous 5-axis machining accessible to everyday numerical control  programmers.

Although some of these techniques might require additional programming time, the benefits of reduced machining, setup time and reduced hand-polishing outweigh the costs.

Motorsport Engineering Sales in the Ascendancy

Motorsport engineering sales are in the ascendancy. Over half of the specialist high precision engineering companies that cater for this exclusive market, have reported increased sales year on year according to figures released by the MIA (Motorsport Industry Association). The MIA’s report states that 10% of suppliers realised increases of over 50%. It is clearly a trend that is bucking that of UK manufacturing sector as a whole.

5 Axis machining is the one of the most advanced components of Computer Numerical Control, (or CNC for short as it is more popularly known in the engineering world), metal engineering. CNC machining has been around now for several decades. It heralded the arrival of pre-programmed automation on a scale of accuracy hitherto unknown. Hardly surprising then that PRV Engineering, one of the engineering industry’s top exponents of top quality engineering services, should be at the forefront of this technology; not only here in the UK, but across mainland Europe too.

As engineering technology progressed, it was only a matter of time before machining in all available planes became a possibility. No doubt you will have seen that the High Speed Two (HS2) rail system project has recently been given the go-ahead by the British government.

This new rail line is intended to revolutionise high-speed transport in Britain, reducing travel times between our major cities of London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.  View a map of the rail system here.  Millions of journeys normally taken by road and air could be taken instead by high-speed rail, benefiting the environment as well as the British traveller.

New general secretary Steve Murphy said: “The development of high speed rail will provide a vital shot in the arm to the whole country especially regions which have suffered from under investment for decades.

“The project will create thousands of construction jobs initially while the line is being built and in the long term as these vital improvements in infrastructure will encourage future investment opportunities.”

In this post we’d like to begin exploring the implications of HS2 on the UK Engineering industry.  No doubt this will be a topic we continue to explore as the project develops.
